Now going out with a group to eat is not a new thing for me, being an avid foodie and always on my toes to learn more about the food, keeps me engaged with many foodie groups and thereby with many foodies and many restaurants, However, none of the experience till date has been quite like the experience I had with this amazing group called Gurgaon foodies.
Gurgaon’s food has intrigued me quite a lot since quite some time, and I am not certain, whether that’s what motivated me to learn more about Pawan Soni, or whether meeting him has made me more attracted to the Gurgaon restaurants, but either way it has happened for good.
To tell you about Pawan , He is The Man behind www.indianfoodfreak.com and along with Aalok Wadhwa , Pawan Initiated the foodies group called the Gurgaon foodies. Like any other group of foodies , Gurgaon foodies focus on food related information, discussions , recipes , tips and off course the limelight of any well run foodie group, the foodies events.
The Restaurant events, fondly called as the Gaonkhanas by the Gurgaon foodies, is what makes the group so interesting and makes each person cherish the company of each other and off course great food at deals one find hard to imagine. Really!!
I attended My first event with Gurgaon foodies, being hosted at The Newly opened Punjab grill, near Galleria, Opp.Hamilton house in Gurgaon.
Before beginning to explain the experience with the food, let me put it up front, that all the food that we had at Punjab grill was offered to us at mere Rs 600 All Inclusive. It included a wide array of the best dishes Punjab grill has to offer across various courses and a free flow of beers.
If you think that I am joking, than you should shut this window right now, as the experience and the variety of food on offer , will make you think not so good of my mental state. That’s how crazy it was!!
Spread across three levels, Punjab grill has the ideal space and location to successfully provide great experiences to its patrons and being at the heart of the city, it is a promising landmark on the map of Gurgaon foodies.
Punjab Grill Food
Aamras Prawns :
This was the first dish I dig my teeth into, and it was the defining amount. The first impression was a grand affair, The aamras prawns were crisp, sweet & sour , spicy , juicy with an orange coloured hue was just brilliant.
Champ :
The Mutton Chaamp is a preparation that will take me back to The Punjab Grill for my next meal. Well cooked and juicy , champ was such a novelty offered by Punjab grill. Loved it.
Chicken Tikka
Succelent and spicy , evely cooked and a nice texture , chicken tikka was well justified as being a hot favourite amongst many Indian Diners, Chicken tikka will not disappoint, My favourite though still remains the champ and the prawns
Duck Kulcha
Woohoo…. I am certain those people , who have decided to read this review further is cursing my mental status. I am not joking by the way, petite kulchas filled with minced duck meat was a total bhangra moment for any foodie.
Veg Starters
Paneer Tikka
Whole some paneer tikkas were marvelous, well marinated , roasted and presented the paneer tikkas had a light crisp exterior and was melt in the mouth juicy, A must try for all vegetarians
Stuffed Mushrooms
Brilliantly prepared stuffed mushrooms is another good option for vegetarians, however, as much as I Iove mushroom as an ingredient as its versatility to go as a starter or main course or a filling or a salad , I believe mushroom is less experimented or used in Indian cuisine as a starter dish. I love when the mushrooms are served to me as a Chinese or a continental preparation , however, the tandoori mushrooms are not my first choice way of eating mushrooms…..may be that has left me with some scope to experiment on some newer ways to prepare Mushroom in Indian spices…. Mushroom 65 May be…
Dahi kebab
Distinct flavor of cardamom in these lovely looking dahi ke kebabs made me have more than few of these dahi kebabs. I let my palate decide the verdict on this one, I loved it. A must try for vegetarians and non vegetarians alike.
Veg Kurkuri
Acclaimed as the speciality of Punjab grill , veg kurkuri is definitely an interesting dish for vegetarians, I like fried dishes ( My tummy is a testimony ) and found the scope of improvement in veg kurkuri , a brilliant dish with a lovely exterior designs right from the manuals of a Brid’s Nest, I didn’t find the filling too exciting, in my opinion it can afford a little more spice and finely chopped vegetables in some varitety. Even the chutney lacked any zest to give the required punch I expected from this beautiful looking starter. I am hoping to try a better version of the veg kurkuri sometime soon as the dish promise to be one hot seller.
The party kept getting better, as more and more friends joined in the fun, beers kept on flowing and it was all that needs to make a perfect afternoon , if there was anything more we could have asked for, I am certain it would have been fulfilled and duly the chef took it up on him to explain us how they do their famous paan shots.
Paan Shots Demo for the foodies With the foodies
Ingredients
Betel leaves (paan ke patte) : 25 leaves
Gulkand : 200 grams
Milk 200 ml
Ice : 5 cubes
Ice cream 2 scoops
Method : Put all ingredients in a mixing jar and mix/grind for 2-3 minutes , serve chilled in shot glass.
Mattha shot was another nice take on the traditional butter milk (mattha) served in shot glasses with basil froth.
Such varieties of starters served with beers, a great group for company and immaculate service of Punjab grill for 600 rupees will be on my buying list any day. Let alone, there was a heavy weight main course dishes waiting for us on the lunch table.
Over some nice interactions with likeminded people we had a great lunch.
Amritsari machi (gravy) , Murg Makhani , meat Punjab grill , Dal makhani , gucchi pulao , raita , naan , rotis , kulchas and some other accompaniments were to be devoured by us foodies, and we were right on our task !!
It was a first time for me to try a amritsari fish in a gravy and it failed to make any impression. Butter chicken was a delight , however, when I had the brilliant meat Punjab grill on my table , I care little for the chicken. Meat Punjab grill is definitely the hero of the gravy dishes offered and was paid deep respect and none was left on the plate.
Dal Punjab grill was tasty yet not the best I’v had, Dal makhani is always a special dish on any Indian cuisine menu , I would like to taste a great dal makhani at punjab grill someday only to match to the standard that has been set by Punjab grill.
Gucchi pulao was a marvelous preparation, gucchi was stuffed and had a great texture , rice was nicely flavored and distinct.
Having Litchi ki tehri in the dessert made it all the more worthwhile to dine at Punjab Grill in future, My favourite licchis with cooked milk dessert was a definite treat to your taste buds and Gulab jamun was no less a favourite among the foodies.
Overall it made for a great experience of the frontier cuisine served at the frontier gaonkhana 🙂
Punjab grill deserves great accolades for a wonderfully well executed event and their service prowess to serve a large group without compromising on service and quality levels of food.
Big thanks to pawan soni for doing such a great job that he is doing for the fraternity and it is highly commendable. We look forward to attend many more events with Gurgaon foodies and enjoy such unforgettable times.
I understand with the advent and such efficient management of foodies group we are looking forward to some really exciting times full of great gastronomy, great company and great times J
